Where is Bhor?

Bhor is a village of Pathankot tehsil in Pathankot district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Pathankot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027498, and it covers 114 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,513 people in Bhor: 785 men and 728 women, living in 269 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 114 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,327 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 927 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 163, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 651 people, about 43 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.15 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.74 per cent and women at 83.36 per cent. The census recorded 423 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 261 main workers, the largest group, 122, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 76 agricultural labourers and 57 cultivators on their own land. A further 162 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Bhor's land. Of the village's 114 hectares, 84 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (43 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (41 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 65 cultivators and 83 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
