Where is Jaswan?

Jaswan is a village of Pathankot tehsil in Pathankot district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Narot Jaimal Singh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027624, and it covers 454 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 967 people in Jaswan: 493 men and 474 women, living in 208 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 454 hectares, the population density works out to about 213 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 961 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 118, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 517 people, about 53 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.97 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.58 per cent and women at 68.18 per cent. The census recorded 296 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 215 main workers, the largest group, 129, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 51 agricultural labourers and 26 cultivators on their own land. A further 81 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (115 hectares). About 333 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
