Where is Raipur?

Raipur is a village in Pathankot tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Narot Jaimal Singh community development block and is served by the Raipur,Chandigarh Raipur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027667, and it covers 357 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,559 people in Raipur: 1,881 men and 1,678 women, living in 740 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 357 hectares, the population density works out to about 997 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 892 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 385, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,268 people, about 64 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.9 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.77 per cent and women at 70.53 per cent. The census recorded 1,172 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 952 main workers, the largest group, 434, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 348 other workers in trade, transport and services and 153 cultivators on their own land. A further 220 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
