Where is Kanshi Barwan?

Kanshi Barwan is a village in Pathankot tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 22 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Narot Jaimal Singh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027713, and it covers 94 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 577 people in Kanshi Barwan: 301 men and 276 women, living in 123 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 94 hectares, the population density works out to about 614 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 917 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 58, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 188 people, about 33 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.09 per cent and women at 65.74 per cent. The census recorded 217 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 104 main workers, the largest group, 68, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 27 cultivators on their own land and 8 household industry workers. A further 113 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Kanshi Barwan's land. Of the village's 94 hectares, 82 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (70 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (12 hectares). About 12 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 29 cultivators and 47 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
