Where is Chohat?

Chohat is a village of Samana tehsil in Patiala district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Samana, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Samana community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036228, and it covers 714 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,213 people in Chohat: 1,253 men and 960 women, living in 444 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 714 hectares, the population density works out to about 310 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 766 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 249, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 663 people, about 30 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.21 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.05 per cent and women at 65.27 per cent. The census recorded 928 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. A further 5 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chohat's land. Of the village's 714 hectares, 589 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (208 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (381 hectares). About 91 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 189 cultivators and 105 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
