Where is Mavi Kalan?

Mavi Kalan is a village in Samana tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Samana, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Samana community development block and is served by the Mavi gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036175, and it covers 721 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,981 people in Mavi Kalan: 1,584 men and 1,397 women, living in 580 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 721 hectares, the population density works out to about 413 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 882 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 371, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,246 people, about 42 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 64.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.47 per cent and women at 55.98 per cent. The census recorded 1,074 workers, about 36 per cent of the village.
