Where is Churason?

Churason is a village in Patiala tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sanaur, about 25 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sanaur community development block and is served by the Churason, Kartarpur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036652, and it covers 680 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,634 people in Churason: 1,392 men and 1,242 women, living in 450 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 680 hectares, the population density works out to about 387 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 892 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 349, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,364 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 64.86 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.96 per cent and women at 56.88 per cent. The census recorded 895 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 667 main workers, the largest group, 285, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 234 cultivators on their own land and 125 agricultural labourers. A further 228 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (626 hectares). About 54 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 16 hours a day. The census recorded 240 cultivators and 270 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Patiala, the tehsil headquarters, and Patiala, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Alipur jattan, Dulbha, Nogawan and Balbhehra.
