Where is Devi Nagar?

Devi Nagar is a village in Patiala tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Patiala, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sanaur community development block and is served by the Devi--Nagar gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036640, and it covers 320 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 679 people in Devi Nagar: 373 men and 306 women, living in 119 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 320 hectares, the population density works out to about 212 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 820 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 71, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 398 people, about 59 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.86 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.61 per cent and women at 67.38 per cent. The census recorded 219 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 138 main workers, the largest group, 52, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 51 agricultural labourers and 32 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 81 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Devi Nagar's land. Of the village's 320 hectares, 297 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 293 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (54 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (239 hectares). About 23 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 53 cultivators and 55 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Patiala, the tehsil headquarters, and Patiala, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kheri Barna, Mavi Sapan, Maddo Majra and Amam Nagar Urf Aliwala.
