Where is Majal Khurd?

Majal Khurd is a village in Patiala tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sanaur, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunerheri community development block and is served by the Majal--Khurd gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036623, and it covers 310 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 539 people in Majal Khurd: 283 men and 256 women, living in 105 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 310 hectares, the population density works out to about 174 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 97, about 18 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 382 people, about 71 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 57.01 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 61.21 per cent and women at 52.38 per cent. The census recorded 196 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 184 main workers, the largest group, 110, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 43 agricultural labourers and 27 cultivators on their own land. A further 12 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Majal Khurd's land. Of the village's 310 hectares, 273 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (35 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (238 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 27 cultivators and 44 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Patiala, the tehsil headquarters, and Patiala, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Dandoa, Balaspur, Salempur Brahmana and Mehandipur.
