Where is Tepla?

Tepla is a village in Rajpura tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rajpura, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ghanaur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037080, and it covers 802 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,029 people in Tepla: 1,598 men and 1,431 women, living in 552 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 802 hectares, the population density works out to about 378 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 895 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 455, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 631 people, about 21 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.93 per cent and women at 69.85 per cent. The census recorded 947 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 895 main workers, the largest group, 571, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 210 cultivators on their own land and 101 agricultural labourers. A further 52 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Tepla's land. Of the village's 802 hectares, 560 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 260 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (260 hectares). About 82 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 212 cultivators and 122 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
