Where is Urdan?

Urdan is a village in Rajpura tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rajpura, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rajpura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037039, and it covers 429 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,056 people in Urdan: 1,091 men and 965 women, living in 355 households, an average of about 5.8 people per household. Spread over its 429 hectares, the population density works out to about 479 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 885 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 263, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,125 people, about 55 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.07 per cent and women at 68.65 per cent. The census recorded 658 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 477 main workers, the largest group, 265, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 133 cultivators on their own land and 72 agricultural labourers. A further 181 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Urdan's land. Of the village's 429 hectares, 386 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (386 hectares). About 43 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 4 hours a day. The census recorded 135 cultivators and 207 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
