History

Rampura Phul was founded in 1680 by Chaudhri Rama, son of Chaudhri Phul — the family name behind the Phulkian misl lineage. 'Rampura' carries Rama's name and 'Phul' his father's. The town grew as a tehsil headquarters, and its railway station made it a commercial centre for the surrounding villages.

After Partition and the reorganisation of Punjab, Rampura Phul remained in Bathinda district, serving as the tehsil town for a large rural area to the north-east of Bathinda city.

Geography & people

Rampura Phul stands in the north-eastern part of Bathinda district, in wheat, paddy and cotton country. The 2011 census counted 51,023 people, making it one of the larger towns of the area. Sikhs and Hindus both live here in large numbers, and the town serves as the market, court and college town for its tehsil.

Places of interest

The old town core, the grain market and the railway station are the town's anchors. St. Xavier's High School is a well-known educational institution of the area.

Notable people

Former Punjab minister Sikander Singh Maluka is associated with nearby Maluka village. The town has produced educationists and administrators who served across the state.
