History
Maur — usually called Maur Mandi — is a market town in Bathinda district's cotton belt, linked with the Talwandi Sabo area. It developed as the trading centre for the surrounding villages, with its mandi handling the wheat, paddy and cotton of the neighbourhood.
Like other Malwa mandi towns, Maur absorbed refugees after Partition and its trade grew in the decades that followed.
Geography & people
Maur lies south-west of Bathinda city, in cotton and wheat country. The 2011 census counted 31,849 residents. The town is the bazaar and service centre for its surrounding villages.
Places of interest
The grain market, the local gurdwaras and the town bazaar are Maur's landmarks. Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at nearby Talwandi Sabo, one of the five Sikh takhts, is a short distance away.
