The Ravi is the river of Lahore, the great city that grew on its eastern bank and took its identity from it. About 720 km long, it is often called the smallest of the five rivers of Punjab after the Beas, but its share of history is out of all proportion to its size: the battle hymns of the Rigveda were sung on its banks, the tombs of Mughal emperors stand in its riverside gardens, and since 1947 it has formed a long stretch of the border between India and Pakistan.

From Bara Bhangal to the plain

The Ravi rises in the Bara Bhangal area of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, below the Hanuman Tibba peak, and runs west and northwest through the Chamba valley, a cold mountain stream between high ridges. It enters the Punjab plain near Madhopur in Pathankot district, where the Madhopur Headworks, first built in the nineteenth century and rebuilt in 1902, divert water into the Upper Bari Doab Canal, one of the oldest and most important canals of Punjab, serving the Majha districts.

Below Madhopur the river becomes the boundary between India and Pakistan for roughly 80 km, sliding past the countryside of Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts on one side and Narowal and Lahore districts on the other. This is the landscape of the Kartarpur Corridor: the gurdwara at Kartarpur, where Guru Nanak spent his last years, stands on the western bank, and the gurdwara at Dera Baba Nanak faces it from the eastern side. Further south the Ravi passes Lahore itself, then turns southwest across the Pakistani Punjab, receiving the Degh and other streams, until it joins the Chenab south of Ahmadpur Sial.

Which city stands on the Ravi?

Lahore, the cultural capital of Punjab, stands on the Ravi's eastern bank, and Punjabis have long called the Ravi the river of Lahore. The Mughal garden suburb of Shahdara Bagh across the river holds the tombs of the emperor Jahangir and the empress Noor Jahan, built facing the water. In older times the river flowed close under the walls of Lahore Fort; like all Punjab rivers it has shifted its course over the centuries, and today the main channel runs further west, spanned by the bridges that carry the city into Shahdara. The Ravi bridge at Lahore is one of the iconic crossings of Punjab, and the river's floodplain, the Ravi City development and the old Ravi Road all carry its name.

Iravati, the river of the hymns

In the Rigveda the Ravi is the Purushni, and later Sanskrit texts call it Iravati; Greek writers rendered it as the Hydraotes. The Battle of the Ten Kings, one of the most famous events of the Vedic age, was fought on the banks of the Purushni, where King Sudas of the Bharatas defeated a confederacy of ten tribes. That makes the Ravi a river of the deepest antiquity in Indian memory, a place where the geography of the hymns can still be walked today. Its modern name is often linked to Ravi, the sun, though the older name Iravati, 'the refreshing one', is the form carried in the classical texts.

Thein Dam and the canals

High in the hills where the Ravi leaves Himachal Pradesh, the Ranjit Sagar Dam, also called the Thein Dam after the village it drowned, was completed in 2001. At about 160 metres it is among the highest earth and rock fill dams in India, and its power house generates 600 MW, making it the largest hydroelectric project of Punjab state. The reservoir spreads across the borders of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Downstream, the Madhopur Headworks and the Upper Bari Doab Canal remain the working heart of the system, watering the farms of Gurdaspur, Amritsar and Kapurthala districts.

The Partition of 1947 split the Ravi's command area between two countries, and the canal colonies and headworks became matters of dispute until the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 allocated the waters of the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej to India, with Pakistan compensated through replacement works. The Shahpurkandi barrage project, downstream of Ranjit Sagar, was built to stop Ravi water flowing unused into Pakistan and to irrigate more of the border districts.

A river under pressure

At Lahore the Ravi today is often a shrunken stream, carrying city effluent and seasonal flows, a shadow of the river the Mughals knew; environmental campaigns in Pakistan have long called for its revival, and the Ravi City project aims to rebuild its channel. On the Indian side, its border reach remains a quiet, green corridor of farms and wetlands between two nations. Smallest but one among the five, the Ravi ties together the Chamba hills, the Majha heartland of Guru Nanak's last years, and the imperial riverfront of Lahore in a single course.
