Rupnagar, the old Ropar, is an Indus Valley site on the bank of the Sutlej and the first Harappan site excavated after India's independence. Its mound gave an unbroken cultural sequence from the Harappan age to medieval times. The ASI Archaeological Museum, opened in 1998, displays its pottery, seals, coins and sculpture.

Why is Rupnagar called the first Harappan site of free India?
When archaeologists began digging the mound at Rupnagar, the old Ropar, on the bank of the Sutlej in the years after independence, they opened the first Harappan site to be excavated in the new India. What they found was bigger than one city: an unbroken cultural sequence running from the Harappan age through the Painted Grey Ware and early historic centuries, the Saka, Kushana and Gupta periods, and on to medieval times. Few sites anywhere let a single trench read four thousand years of settlement like the pages of one book, which is why Rupnagar holds a special place in Indian archaeology.
A town on an ancient mound
Rupnagar stands on the left bank of the Sutlej where the river leaves the Shivalik hills, which spread along the opposite bank, for the Punjab plains, about 47 kilometres northwest of Chandigarh. The ancient site is counted among the Indus Valley settlements of the Ghaggar-Hakra river system, and it is noticed in reference works such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The historic town above the mound is younger: tradition says an 11th-century raja, Rokeshar, named it for his son Rup Sen. The modern town keeps the double identity in its very ground, a district headquarters and rail junction sitting on top of a Harappan city.
What the excavations found
The dig divided the mound into periods, and each period spoke. From the Harappan levels came the pottery, tools and ornaments of the Indus world, including material of the Bara culture such as a faience sling ball. Later layers yielded Painted Grey Ware, then beads of the Northern Black Polished Ware age, a Shunga-period yakshi plaque and terracotta figures, and a Kushan terracotta head. Coins tell the same long story in metal: punch-marked pieces, issues of Indo-Greek and tribal rulers, a hoard of 660 coins from one trench, coins of the Huna kings Toramana and Mihirakula, and in the upper levels a gold coin of the Chandragupta-Kumaradevi type. A copper plate with a griffin and a carved stone medallion, dated between about 200 BC and 600 AD, show the town's crafts keeping pace with its trade.
Archaeologists divided the mound into a numbered sequence of periods, from Period I, the Harappan levels at the bottom, up to Period VI in medieval times, and the Ropar sequence became a yardstick: when a pot, bead or coin type appears at another site in the region, its place in the Ropar ladder helps date it. The sequence matters because it has no clean breaks. People did not abandon this riverbank and return centuries later; they rebuilt on the same ground, generation after generation, which is how a Harappan town slowly becomes a Gupta town and then a medieval one on a single mound.
The Archaeological Museum, Rupnagar
The finds are displayed a short walk from the mound in the Archaeological Museum, an Archaeological Survey of India museum opened to the public in 1998 on the Rupnagar to Chandigarh road. Its galleries arrange the story in objects: Harappan grave pottery in red ware, dishes on stands, jars and bowls buried with the dead; the steatite seal and ring stones; copper and bronze implements; and the celebrated Vina Vadini, a figure of a woman playing the vina. The coin cabinets run from punch-marked silver to Gupta gold, and the walls carry photographs of the protected monuments of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, making the small museum a gateway to the whole region's archaeology.
The mound is not a fenced ruin apart from the town; the town is its topmost layer, and building work in Rupnagar still turns up old pottery and coins from time to time. The living town adds its own later chapters to the same ground, including the gurdwaras of the Guru Gobind Singh Ji era on and near the riverbank, such as Bhatha Sahib and Tibbi Sahib, so that a single visit can move from Harappan graves to the age of the Khalsa without leaving the Sutlej bank.
Visiting Rupnagar's ancient site
Rupnagar is an easy stop on the Chandigarh to Anandpur Sahib road, and the museum needs about an hour. Pair it with the Ropar Wetland, the Ramsar-listed lake formed by the Sutlej headworks just outside town, where the river that fed the Harappan settlement still spreads under the Shivalik wall. Sanghol, the other great ancient site of this region, lies across the districts to the south: together the two mounds frame the oldest chapter of Punjab's story, one on the Sutlej and one on the old Ghaggar plain.
