Town in Malwa, Punjab · the township of the Bhakra Nangal project

In short

Nangal is the planned township of the Bhakra Nangal project in Rupnagar district, built from 1948 to house the engineers and workers who tamed the Sutlej. The Nangal Dam, its hydel channel and the downstream wetland define the town, along with the National Fertilizers plant. It is the gateway to Bhakra Dam upstream — the concrete giant Nehru dedicated in 1963.

History

Nangal barely existed before the Bhakra Nangal project. When work began in 1948 on harnessing the Sutlej — the project that would become the signature of Nehru-era nation-building — a full township was laid out at Nangal for the engineers, workers and their families. Planned colonies, schools, hospitals and clubs rose on the riverbank, and the town's grid still betrays its origins as a project camp that never left.

The Nangal Dam, downstream of the main Bhakra Dam, diverts the Sutlej into the Nangal hydel channel, feeding powerhouses and the vast canal network of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. When Jawaharlal Nehru dedicated the Bhakra Dam on 22 October 1963 — calling such projects the 'temples of modern India' — Nangal was the town that had built it. The later arrival of the National Fertilizers plant added an industrial second act.

Geography & people

Nangal sits on the Sutlej at the point where the river leaves the Shivalik hills for the plains, at about 326 metres above sea level. The Bhakra reservoir's tail and the Nangal wetland — a haven for migratory birds — lie at its doorstep. The town holds nearly 50,000 people, a notably cosmopolitan mix for its size: families from across India who came for the project and stayed for generations, alongside local Punjabi villagers.

The township's planned sectors, tree-lined avenues and project-era clubs give Nangal a character unlike any other town in Punjab — part industrial colony, part hill-station suburb.

Places of interest

The dams are the attraction: the Nangal Dam and hydel channel, and upstream the mighty Bhakra Dam with its Gobind Sagar reservoir. The Nangal wetland draws birdwatchers in winter, when migratory waterfowl arrive. Anandpur Sahib, the holy city of the Khalsa, is a short drive away, making Nangal a natural halt on the pilgrim circuit.

Notable people

Nangal's notable people are its builders — the engineers of the Bhakra Beas Management Board and the generations of project families whose labour raised the dams. The town's identity is collective and technical: it is one of the few places in Punjab where a family's history is measured in the projects it served.
