Where is Alowal?

Alowal is a village in Rupnagar tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rupnagar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038603, and it covers 335 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 884 people in Alowal: 459 men and 425 women, living in 162 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 335 hectares, the population density works out to about 264 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 926 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 118, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 229 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.03 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.71 per cent and women at 74.06 per cent. The census recorded 191 workers, about 22 per cent of the village. Of the 137 main workers, the largest group, 62, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 56 cultivators on their own land and 10 agricultural labourers. A further 54 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Alowal's land. Of the village's 335 hectares, 179 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 145 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (15 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (130 hectares). About 131 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 60 cultivators and 30 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
