Where is Bhangal?

Bhangal is a village in Nangal tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nangal, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038541, and it covers 353 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,352 people in Bhangal: 710 men and 642 women, living in 267 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 353 hectares, the population density works out to about 383 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 904 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 205, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 164 people, about 12 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.76 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.89 per cent and women at 67.89 per cent. The census recorded 662 workers, about 49 per cent of the village. Of the 461 main workers, the largest group, 283, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 169 cultivators on their own land and 8 household industry workers. A further 201 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bhangal's land. Of the village's 353 hectares, 151 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (151 hectares). About 118 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 356 cultivators and 3 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Mehandpur, Daghaur, Majari and Sukhsal.
