Where is Dher?

Dher is a village in Anandpur Sahib tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Anandpur Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038346, and it covers 265 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,366 people in Dher: 1,226 men and 1,140 women, living in 462 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 265 hectares, the population density works out to about 893 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 930 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 188, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 390 people, about 16 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.43 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.53 per cent and women at 74.06 per cent. The census recorded 798 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 726 main workers, the largest group, 455, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 235 cultivators on their own land and 28 agricultural labourers. A further 72 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dher's land. Of the village's 265 hectares, 220 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 219 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (219 hectares). About 38 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 253 cultivators and 40 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
