Where is Rajgiri?

Rajgiri is a village of Anandpur Sahib tehsil in Rupnagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 24 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Rajgiri (Nili), Rajgiri (Kimabass) gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038492, and it covers 788 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,075 people in Rajgiri: 554 men and 521 women, living in 235 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 788 hectares, the population density works out to about 136 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 940 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 158, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 764 people, about 71 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.08 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.17 per cent and women at 65.37 per cent. The census recorded 304 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 249 main workers, the largest group, 173, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 54 cultivators on their own land and 22 agricultural labourers. A further 55 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Rajgiri's land. Of the village's 788 hectares, 163 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 103 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (103 hectares). About 145 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 55 cultivators and 29 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Dhamana, Khatana, Abiana Khurd and Bathlour Khad.
