Where is Karura?

Karura is a village of Anandpur Sahib tehsil in Rupnagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Karura, Karura Khurd, Karura Tapprian gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038383, and it covers 494 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,333 people in Karura: 672 men and 661 women, living in 248 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 494 hectares, the population density works out to about 270 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 984 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 148, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 321 people, about 24 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.12 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.58 per cent and women at 67.73 per cent. The census recorded 440 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 369 main workers, the largest group, 131, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 116 agricultural labourers and 96 cultivators on their own land. A further 71 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Karura's land. Of the village's 494 hectares, 240 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 147 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (147 hectares). About 18 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 105 cultivators and 152 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school and one government middle school, so children can study in the village up to Class 8. The directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 12 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Barian, Katta, Thana and Ghahi Majra.
