Where is Katta?

Katta is a village in Anandpur Sahib tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Katta, Katta (Chabrewal) gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038384, and it covers 137 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 550 people in Katta: 292 men and 258 women, living in 105 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 137 hectares, the population density works out to about 401 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 884 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 71, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 318 people, about 58 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.32 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.46 per cent and women at 64 per cent. The census recorded 150 workers, about 27 per cent of the village. Of the 103 main workers, the largest group, 46, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 33 other workers in trade, transport and services and 24 cultivators on their own land. A further 47 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Katta's land. Of the village's 137 hectares, 15 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 7 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (7 hectares). About 91 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 27 cultivators and 55 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Karura, Ghahi Majra, Barian and Sabaur.
