Where is Sabaur?

Sabaur is a village in Anandpur Sahib tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Sabaur, Gaddiwal, Manku Majra gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038386, and it covers 633 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,948 people in Sabaur: 1,031 men and 917 women, living in 355 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 633 hectares, the population density works out to about 308 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 889 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 245, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 160 people, about 8 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.57 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.49 per cent and women at 72.99 per cent. The census recorded 606 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 519 main workers, the largest group, 313, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 182 cultivators on their own land and 13 agricultural labourers. A further 87 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sabaur's land. Of the village's 633 hectares, 251 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 224 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (224 hectares). About 49 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 186 cultivators and 22 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Ghahi Majra, Bhaini, Katta and Aggampur.
