Where is Khatana?

Khatana is a village of Anandpur Sahib tehsil in Rupnagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Khatana, Khatana (Haripur Phulre) gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038493, and it covers 949 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 559 people in Khatana: 274 men and 285 women, living in 102 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 949 hectares, the population density works out to about 59 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1040 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 60, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 181 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.16 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.64 per cent and women at 71.83 per cent. The census recorded 157 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 149 main workers, the largest group, 91, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 35 agricultural labourers and 22 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 8 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Khatana's land. Of the village's 949 hectares, 175 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 154 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (154 hectares). About 96 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 94 cultivators and 38 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
