Where is Mukari?

Mukari is a village in Anandpur Sahib tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038430, and it covers 231 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,140 people in Mukari: 569 men and 571 women, living in 204 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 231 hectares, the population density works out to about 494 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1004 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 106, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 71 people, about 6 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.43 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.42 per cent and women at 77.54 per cent. The census recorded 273 workers, about 24 per cent of the village. Of the 262 main workers, the largest group, 179, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 73 cultivators on their own land and 5 agricultural labourers. A further 11 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Mukari's land. Of the village's 231 hectares, 106 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 101 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (101 hectares). About 26 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 75 cultivators and 10 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

It also had a PDS ration shop, mobile phone coverage and an internet common service centre. Banking was available in the village itself, with a cooperative bank branch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 18 hours a day.

Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Mawa, Samirowal, Gobindpur and Sukhe Majra.
