Bhani Ganduan is a village of Sunam tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Sunam, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sunam community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039869, and it covers 337 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 939 people in Bhani Ganduan: 510 men and 429 women, living in 183 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 337 hectares, the population density works out to about 279 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 841 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 98, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 247 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 53.51 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 59.38 per cent and women at 46.82 per cent. The census recorded 260 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 212 main workers, the largest group, 161, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 28 cultivators on their own land and 21 agricultural labourers. A further 48 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (231 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (76 hectares). About 30 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Sunam, the tehsil headquarters, and Sangrur, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
