Where is Dhandoli Kalan?

Dhandoli Kalan is a village of Dirba tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Sunam, about 19 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sunam community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039841, and it covers 913 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,577 people in Dhandoli Kalan: 1,381 men and 1,196 women, living in 514 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 913 hectares, the population density works out to about 282 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 866 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 276, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 985 people, about 38 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 58.5 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 63.33 per cent and women at 52.98 per cent. The census recorded 1,019 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 937 main workers, the largest group, 334, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 301 other workers in trade, transport and services and 300 agricultural labourers. A further 82 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (500 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (333 hectares). About 72 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Dirba, the tehsil headquarters, and Sangrur, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Janal, Rogla, Toor Banjara and Ubha.
