Majhi is a village of Bhawanigarh tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Bhawani Garh, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhawanigarh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039703, and it covers 894 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,772 people in Majhi: 1,458 men and 1,314 women, living in 532 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 894 hectares, the population density works out to about 310 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 901 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 320, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 900 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.64 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.94 per cent and women at 59.69 per cent. The census recorded 906 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 747 main workers, the largest group, 362, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 327 cultivators on their own land and 29 agricultural labourers. A further 159 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
