Where is Ramgarh?

Ramgarh is a village in Bhawanigarh tehsil of Sangrur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bhawani Garh, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhawanigarh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039729, and it covers 223 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 361 people in Ramgarh: 192 men and 169 women, living in 65 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 223 hectares, the population density works out to about 162 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 880 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 30, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 208 people, about 58 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.75 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.43 per cent and women at 59.62 per cent. The census recorded 126 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 113 main workers, the largest group, 52, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 39 cultivators on their own land and 22 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 13 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Ramgarh's land. Of the village's 223 hectares, 197 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (197 hectares). About 26 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 42 cultivators and 53 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Bhawani Garh, about 10 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Bhawanigarh, the tehsil headquarters, and Sangrur, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kapial, Basiarkh, Batriana and Bijalpur.
