Where is Taranji Khera?

Taranji Khera is a village of Sunam tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Sunam, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sunam community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039846, and it covers 480 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,080 people in Taranji Khera: 1,080 men and 1,000 women, living in 399 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 480 hectares, the population density works out to about 433 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 926 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 238, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 764 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.51 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 69.34 per cent and women at 53 per cent. The census recorded 740 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 324 main workers, the largest group, 151, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 109 household industry workers and 40 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 416 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
