Where is the Saragarhi Memorial?

The Saragarhi Memorial stands in Ferozepur Cantonment, a white domed memorial gurdwara guarded by old cannons. It honours the 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment who died on 12 September 1897 defending the Saragarhi post, a tiny signalling station in the hills of the North-West Frontier, in what is now Pakistan. The battle was fought hundreds of miles away; the memorial is here because Ferozepur was the regiment's home. The 36th Sikhs were raised at Ferozepur in April 1887, and most of the twenty-one came from this Majha and Malwa countryside.

What happened at Saragarhi on 12 September 1897?

Saragarhi was a small post between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan on the Samana range, held so that the two forts could signal to each other by heliograph, flashes of sunlight on a mirror. On the morning of 12 September 1897, some 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai tribesmen surrounded the post and opened fire. Inside were 21 men under Havildar Ishar Singh. Their signaller, Sepoy Gurmukh Singh, kept the heliograph working to Fort Lockhart as the fight went on, reporting the attack and asking for help that could not reach them. The colonel's answer, relayed back, was to hold on. Offers to surrender were refused.

The fight lasted about seven hours. One by one the defenders fell, until only Ishar Singh remained, who took his rifle to the doorway and fought alone at the end. Gurmukh Singh, the last man, asked permission to stop signalling and join the fighting, and died with a rifle in his hands. When the post was retaken two days later, the twenty-one were found at their positions. Every one of them was posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, then the highest gallantry award an Indian soldier could receive, the equal of the Victoria Cross. It remains one of the most famous last stands in military history.

The memorial gurdwara at Ferozepur

To commemorate the men, the British raised two Saragarhi memorial gurdwaras, one at Amritsar near the Golden Temple and one here in Ferozepur Cantonment. The Ferozepur memorial was built by the army with stones brought from the Saragarhi post itself, and it was opened in February 1904 by Sir Charles Rivaz. The names of all twenty-one soldiers are inscribed on its walls, old cannons stand around the building, and a commemorative tablet records the Government of India's tribute to their heroism. The memorial is a protected monument, and it functions as a gurdwara, so visitors remove their shoes and cover their heads.

Saragarhi Day and the regiment today

The 36th Sikhs live on as the 4th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment, and the regiment marks 12 September every year as its Regimental Battle Honours Day. At Ferozepur, Saragarhi Day brings serving soldiers, veterans, schoolchildren and NCC cadets to the memorial for wreath-laying and a moment of silence, and remembrance runs are held on the Ferozepur roads. A new state memorial at Ferozepur has also been announced in recent years, with a crore of rupees allocated in 2019, to give the story a larger public monument beside the old gurdwara.

That the memorial is a gurdwara and not a fenced monument shapes how it feels. Prayer, not display, is its daily business: the names on the wall are read in a place where the Guru Granth Sahib is present and where soldiers' families come to sit as much as to look. This dual nature was the army's deliberate choice in 1904, a war memorial raised in the form the men's own faith would keep alive, and it is why Saragarhi Day at Ferozepur blends parade-ground ceremony with the quiet of a shrine. The district around it is old soldiering country in every direction, from the Anglo-Sikh war fields of Mudki and Ferozeshah to the border at Hussainiwala, and the memorial sits at the centre of that memory.

Visiting the memorial

The memorial stands inside Ferozepur Cantonment and is open to visitors through the day; dress and behave as you would in any gurdwara. The inscribed names reward a slow read: twenty-one men, their ranks and their single shared date. Combine the visit with the Hussainiwala National Martyrs Memorial, about 12 kilometres away, and Ferozepur gives you two of Punjab's most moving memorial landscapes in one trip.
