Where is Ghoga?

Ghoga is a village of Kharar tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kharar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039105, and it covers 143 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 587 people in Ghoga: 311 men and 276 women, living in 111 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 143 hectares, the population density works out to about 410 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 887 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 65, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 216 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.25 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.11 per cent and women at 77.37 per cent. The census recorded 170 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 163 main workers, the largest group, 70, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 61 cultivators on their own land and 27 agricultural labourers. A further 7 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Ghoga's land. Of the village's 143 hectares, 128 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 126 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (126 hectares). About 15 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. With 62 cultivators and 29 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Garanga, Dhabali, Ghoga Kheri and Dharak Kalan.
