Where is Khalawar?

Khalawar is a village of SAS Nagar tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dera Bassi, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rajpura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039246, and it covers 473 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,360 people in Khalawar: 730 men and 630 women, living in 236 households, an average of about 5.8 people per household. Spread over its 473 hectares, the population density works out to about 288 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 863 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 157, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 446 people, about 33 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.81 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.6 per cent and women at 71.7 per cent. The census recorded 415 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 345 main workers, the largest group, 195, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 148 cultivators on their own land and 2 agricultural labourers. A further 70 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Khalawar's land. Of the village's 473 hectares, 428 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 410 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (175 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (235 hectares). About 45 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 150 cultivators and 60 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
