Where is Sotal?

Sotal is a village of Kharar tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kharar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039102, and it covers 299 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 761 people in Sotal: 402 men and 359 women, living in 148 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 299 hectares, the population density works out to about 255 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 893 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 99, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 558 people, about 73 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.42 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.25 per cent and women at 75.08 per cent. The census recorded 222 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 221 main workers, the largest group, 145, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 52 agricultural labourers and 24 cultivators on their own land. A further 1 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sotal's land. Of the village's 299 hectares, 275 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (275 hectares). About 24 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 5 hours a day. The census recorded 25 cultivators and 52 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
