Where is Tarauli?

Tarauli is a village in SAS Nagar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded S.A.S. Nagar, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039163, and it covers 110 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 536 people in Tarauli: 272 men and 264 women, living in 78 households, an average of about 6.9 people per household. Spread over its 110 hectares, the population density works out to about 487 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 971 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 58, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 34 people, about 6 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.77 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.75 per cent and women at 81.62 per cent. The census recorded 168 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 165 main workers, the largest group, 66, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 44 agricultural labourers and 35 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 3 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (85 hectares). About 12 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 66 cultivators and 44 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
