Where is Chankoi?

Chankoi is a village in Balachaur tehsil of SBS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Balachaur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Saroya community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032485, and it covers 239 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 797 people in Chankoi: 415 men and 382 women, living in 172 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 239 hectares, the population density works out to about 333 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 920 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 62, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 568 people, about 71 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.59 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90 per cent and women at 74.65 per cent. The census recorded 324 workers, about 41 per cent of the village. Of the 310 main workers, the largest group, 131, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 111 agricultural labourers and 67 cultivators on their own land. A further 14 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chankoi's land. Of the village's 239 hectares, 222 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (222 hectares). About 17 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 67 cultivators and 114 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
