Where is Hansron?

Hansron is a village in Nawanshahr tehsil of SBS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nawansahar, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nawanshahr community development block and is served by the Hasron gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032264, and it covers 195 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,196 people in Hansron: 588 men and 608 women, living in 232 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 195 hectares, the population density works out to about 613 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1034 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 101, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 542 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.55 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.17 per cent and women at 76.12 per cent. The census recorded 393 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 213 main workers, the largest group, 119, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 68 other workers in trade, transport and services and 24 household industry workers. A further 180 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Hansron's land. Of the village's 195 hectares, 163 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (163 hectares). About 32 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 137 cultivators and 18 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Nawansahar, about 7 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Nawanshahr, the tehsil headquarters, and Nawanshahr, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Mahrampur, Rahon Ghakewal, Dodhala and Dharmkot.
