Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of Bhagat Singh

Khatkar Kalan is a village in Banga tehsil of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, in Punjab's Doaba region, about 5 kilometres from Banga town. Across India, its name means one thing above all: this is the ancestral village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, the revolutionary who was hanged by the British in Lahore on 23 March 1931, aged just 23. The district itself was renamed Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in his honour in 2008, and the village keeps the two places where his memory lives: the family's ancestral house and the Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Museum.

Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 at Banga, and Khatkar Kalan was his family's home village. His father, Sardar Kishan Singh, his grandfather, Sardar Arjan Singh, and his great-grandfather, Sardar Fateh Singh, all belonged to this village, and the young Bhagat Singh spent his early years here before going to Lahore for his studies. Rebellion ran in the family: his uncle, Sardar Ajit Singh, was a leader of the Pagri Sambhal Jatta movement against British farm laws and spent years in exile. The other figure who shaped him, the Ghadar revolutionary Kartar Singh Sarabha, is remembered in the village's museum to this day.

The ancestral house: a protected monument

The family's house in the village was built in 1858 by Sardar Fateh Singh, Bhagat Singh's great-grandfather. It is a modest village house of its time, and its modesty is part of its power: this was the home of a farming family, not a palace, and its rooms and courtyard show the everyday world the revolutionary came from.

In 1982, the house was declared a protected monument under the Punjab Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964, placing it under the care of the state's archaeology department. Of all the places linked to Bhagat Singh, the ancestral house at Khatkar Kalan is the most personal: Hussainiwala has the cremation ground and Lahore has the jail, but this is where the family lived.

The Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Museum

The Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Museum stands close to the ancestral house. It was opened on 23 March 1981, the fiftieth anniversary of Bhagat Singh's martyrdom, and its collection is built around the relics of his death and his reading life. On display are his ashes, the blood-soaked sand gathered from the cremation on the banks of the Sutlej, and the blood-stained newspaper in which the ashes were wrapped.

One exhibit ties the village to his other great influence: a page of the judgement in the first Lahore Conspiracy Case, the trial in which Kartar Singh Sarabha was sentenced to death, carries Bhagat Singh's own handwritten notes. The museum also holds the copy of the Bhagavad Gita, signed by Bhagat Singh, that was given to him in Lahore jail, along with photographs and other personal belongings.

In 2009, the state government added the Bhagat Singh Memorial in the village, built at a cost of about Rs 16.8 crore. The village is now being developed further: a heritage street under the central government's iconic tourist destinations scheme will link the museum with the ancestral house, and the Punjab government's Rs 52-crore Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Heritage Complex, with a replica house, a courtroom experience, a library and an auditorium, was in its final stages in September 2026, when the Chief Minister said it would be dedicated to the public soon.

Every year on 23 March, observed across Punjab as Shaheedi Diwas, the village fills with visitors, students and officials who come to pay homage at the museum and the ancestral house, and state-level commemorations are held here on the martyrdom day and on Bhagat Singh's birth anniversary.

The village today

Behind the memorials, Khatkar Kalan remains a working Doaba farming village. The 2011 census counted 1,811 people in 409 households. Women outnumbered men, 933 to 878, a sex ratio of 1,063 women per 1,000 men, and 191 children were under seven. Scheduled Castes made up 798 residents, about 44 per cent of the village. Literacy stood at 80.62 per cent, with men at 86.32 per cent and women at 75.3 per cent.

Of the village's 561 workers, the largest group, 416, were other workers in trade, transport and services; 112 residents were cultivators and 16 agricultural labourers. The village covers 333 hectares, of which 285 hectares were net sown area in 2011, every sown hectare irrigated by wells and tube-wells. Most farm work is done by the landholding families themselves.

The 2011 Village Directory recorded government schools in the village from primary to senior secondary level, a primary health centre, a primary health sub-centre and a dispensary, treated tap water, a sub post office, a cooperative bank branch, a PDS ration shop and an anganwadi centre. The village has its own railway station and both public and private bus services, and Banga, 5 kilometres away, is the tehsil headquarters; Nawanshahr is the district headquarters.

The district, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, also carries his name.

Visitors can see the protected ancestral house of Bhagat Singh's family, the Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Museum with its relics and photographs, and the Bhagat Singh Memorial built in 2009. A heritage complex with a heritage street linking the museum and the house was nearing completion in 2026.
