History
Banga's history is the quiet history of a Doaba qasba — a market town that served the villages around it through the Sikh, British and post-independence periods. It lay in Jalandhar district for most of its recorded life, then in Hoshiarpur, before the creation of Nawanshahr district in 1995 gave it a new district headquarters nearby; in 2008 that district was renamed Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. Through every reorganisation Banga has remained what it always was: the tehsil town and mandi for its cluster of villages.
The town's fame is borrowed and gladly so: just outside Banga lies Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of Bhagat Singh, with the Shaheed-e-Azam museum and the protected ancestral house. Visitors to the memorial pass through Banga's bazaar, and the town has grown used to its role as the gateway to the martyr's village.
Geography & people
Banga stands at about 240 metres above sea level on the roads linking Nawanshahr with Phagwara and Garhshankar, in the central Doaba plain. It is a municipal council and a tehsil headquarters. Punjabi is the everyday language; the town's population mixes trading families, government servants and the farming community of the surrounding villages, which grow wheat, paddy and sugarcane.
Like the rest of the Doaba, Banga has deep diaspora connections — many families have members in Canada and Britain, whose remittances have rebuilt the town's houses and funded its schools.
Places of interest
Banga's great attraction is next door: Khatkar Kalan's Bhagat Singh museum and ancestral house, a few minutes away. In the town itself, the grain market, the old bazaar and the town's gurdwaras and temples make for a typical Doaba qasba walk. The town is also a convenient base for exploring the district's villages.
Notable people
Banga's notable people are its neighbours: the Singh family of Khatkar Kalan, whose son Bhagat Singh made the district's name immortal. The town itself takes pride in its teachers, traders and soldiers — and in its role as the keeper of the road to the martyr's village, a responsibility it has carried with quiet dignity for generations.
