Where is Mahalon?

Mahalon is a village of Nawanshahr tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nawansahar, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nawanshahr community development block and is served by the Mahallo, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032088, and it covers 482 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,862 people in Mahalon: 992 men and 870 women, living in 371 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 482 hectares, the population density works out to about 386 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 877 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 190, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,456 people, about 78 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.05 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.07 per cent and women at 70.18 per cent. The census recorded 581 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 567 main workers, the largest group, 312, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 127 agricultural labourers and 80 cultivators on their own land. A further 14 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Mahalon's land. Of the village's 482 hectares, 386 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (386 hectares). About 96 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
