Where is Malakpur?

Malakpur is a village of Nawanshahr tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nawansahar, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nawanshahr community development block and is served by the Malik Pur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032339, and it covers 496 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 353 people in Malakpur: 190 men and 163 women, living in 73 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 496 hectares, the population density works out to about 71 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 858 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 31, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 13 people, about 4 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 92.24 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 96 per cent and women at 87.76 per cent. The census recorded 132 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 92 main workers, the largest group, 38, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 34 other workers in trade, transport and services and 11 agricultural labourers. A further 40 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Nawanshahr, the tehsil headquarters, and Nawanshahr, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Chak Alahi Bakhash, Janian, Alowal and Dhingarpur.
