Where is Mahan Bhaddar?

Mahan Bhaddar is a village of Muktsar tehsil in Sri Muktsar Sahib district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Sri Muktsar Sahib, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Muktsar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035376, and it covers 993 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 4,562 people in Mahan Bhaddar: 2,389 men and 2,173 women, living in 939 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 993 hectares, the population density works out to about 459 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 910 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 498, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,781 people, about 61 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.03 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 69.01 per cent and women at 54.42 per cent. The census recorded 1,655 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 1,474 main workers, the largest group, 812, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 409 cultivators on their own land and 242 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 181 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
