Stockton is a port city in California's northern San Joaquin Valley, the county seat of San Joaquin County, and the founding place of Sikh America: the first gurdwara in the United States opened here on 24 October 1912. A 2020 derived estimate puts about 4,606 Sikhs in the city, 1.44 per cent of its 320,804 residents, because the United States census does not ask about religion.

Where is Stockton, and why do Punjabis live there?

Stockton sits on the San Joaquin River at the edge of the Sacramento and San Joaquin River Delta, about 80 miles east of San Francisco and south of Sacramento. Founded in 1849 during the Gold Rush and incorporated in 1850, it had 320,804 residents in the 2020 census, the 11th most populous city in California, with a metropolitan population of 816,108. Its deepwater port, opened in 1933, made it one of California's only inland seaports, alongside Sacramento.

Punjabis live here because Punjabi farmers came for Delta and valley land in the early 1900s, and they built an institution that anchored every later arrival: a gurdwara of their own, when no other existed in the country. Farming, family and that temple kept Stockton a Punjabi centre long after larger valley cities grew faster. Stockton is one of the cities listed under Punjabi places in the United States.

What do the numbers say?

Every Sikh figure for Stockton is an estimate, and this page treats it that way. The 2020 derived estimate, built from census counts of people who wrote in Sikh as their ethnicity, gives 4,606 Sikhs for the city of Stockton, 1.44 per cent, and 15,964 for San Joaquin County as a whole, 2.05 per cent of the county, the third highest county total in that table.

Punjabi language data from the American Community Survey shows the county pattern in more detail. In the 2017 to 2021 ACS, the Stockton City North PUMA, covering northern Stockton, counted 3,927 Punjabi Americans, 2.2 per cent of that area, while the Tracy, Manteca and Lathrop PUMA in southern San Joaquin County counted 9,432, the second largest PUMA total in the country. Stockton's share looks modest beside Yuba City or Fresno today, but its importance is historical first and numerical second: this is where organised Sikh life in America began.

The first gurdwara in the United States

Before there was a temple, Punjabi Sikh farmers prayed together on farms. Jawala Singh, a successful potato farmer in the San Joaquin Valley, leased a 500 acre ranch near Holt, next to Stockton, with his business partner Wasakha Singh. Immigrant farmers gathered in a room on the ranch to pray with the Guru Granth Sahib present, and that ranch became a religious, social and political centre.

In 1912 the Pacific Coast Khalsa Diwan Society founded a gurdwara in Stockton, in a house on South Grant Street. Gurdwara Sahib Stockton, at 1930 South Sikh Temple Street in its present form, is recorded across the opened sources as established on 24 October 1912, the first Sikh house of worship in the United States. The Stockton city history itself lists the gurdwara among the city's notable attractions for exactly that reason.

The temple served people far beyond Stockton. Before Yuba City built its own gurdwara in 1970, Sikhs there travelled about 90 to 100 miles to Stockton, a measure of how singular this one institution was for the whole valley in its first decades.

Ghadar, scholarships and Dalip Singh Saund

Stockton's gurdwara was never only a place of prayer. Jawala Singh went on to help form the Ghadar Party, the revolutionary movement that called on diaspora Indians to end British rule in India, and the Stockton Gurdwara was an important benefactor of the party, sponsoring The Ghadar, described as the first Punjabi language newspaper in the United States.

The founders also invested in education. Jawala Singh and Wasakha Singh started six Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Educational Scholarships at the University of California, Berkeley, recorded in California legislative resolutions on the temple's centenary. Among those whose studies the Stockton Gurdwara sponsored was Dalip Singh Saund, who in 1956 became the first Asian American, the first Indian American and the first person of a non Abrahamic faith elected to the United States Congress, serving from 1957 to 1963.

Those three threads, worship, politics and education, explain why a farm town temple mattered nationally. Stockton gave Punjabi America its first permanent address, its first newspaper backing and one of its first routes into American public life.

Farming, the Delta and later growth

The work that brought Punjabis to Stockton was the same work that built the valley: irrigated farming in the Delta and San Joaquin Valley, potatoes, asparagus and other row crops around a river port city. Early settlers faced the same barriers as Punjabis elsewhere in California: alien land laws, immigration restriction in 1924, and a long wait until 1946 for a legal route to naturalisation, and until 1965 for family immigration to grow again.

Post 1965 immigration renewed the community, as it did in Fresno and across the Central Valley, where Punjabi became the third most spoken language after English and Spanish. Newer San Joaquin County growth has spread south to Tracy, Manteca and Lathrop as well as north Stockton, but the historic centre remains the 1912 temple and the streets around South Grant Street and Sikh Temple Street.

Stockton's Punjabi community today

Today Stockton's Punjabis are a smaller share of a large, diverse port city than in Yuba City, and the community is known first for its history: visitors come to see the first gurdwara in the United States, and Sikh Americans across the country trace their institutional story back to 1912 here. The temple still functions as a working gurdwara, not a museum, serving a living congregation in San Joaquin County. For the full map, see Punjabi places in the United States.
