History at a glance
Sacramento is the capital city of California, a river city at the meeting of the Sacramento and American rivers, and the government centre around which one of the largest Punjabi communities in the western United States has grown. A 2020 derived estimate puts about 15,920 Sikhs in Sacramento County, 1.0 per cent of the county, because the United States census does not ask about religion.
Where is Sacramento, and why do Punjabis live there?
Sacramento is the county seat of Sacramento County in the Sacramento Valley, laid out in December 1848 just south of Sutter's Fort and incorporated on 27 February 1850, which makes it the oldest incorporated city in California. It became the state capital in 1854. The 2020 census counted 524,943 people in the city, and the metropolitan area counted 2,463,127. The city sits where the American River joins the Sacramento River, with a deep water port linked through the Sacramento and San Joaquin River Delta to San Francisco Bay.
Punjabis live here for the same reason Punjabis first came to this valley more than a century ago: the farmland of the Sacramento Valley looked and worked like Punjab, and farm work became land, businesses and families. Government, health and service jobs in a state capital then widened the community beyond farming. Sacramento is one of the cities listed under Punjabi places in the United States.
What do the numbers say?
Every Sikh figure for Sacramento is an estimate, and this page treats it that way. The 2020 derived estimate, built from census counts of people who wrote in Sikh as their ethnicity, gives 5,604 Sikhs for the city of Sacramento, 1.07 per cent, and 15,920 for Sacramento County as a whole, 1.0 per cent of the county. The neighbouring city of Elk Grove, in the same county, was estimated at 3,492 Sikhs, 1.98 per cent.
Punjabi language and ancestry data from the American Community Survey tells the wider story. In the 2017 to 2021 ACS, the Sacramento and Roseville combined statistical area counted 31,576 Punjabi Americans, 1.26 per cent of its population, the third largest Punjabi total for a primary statistical area in the United States. Inside the county, the northwest Sacramento PUMA, covering Natomas, counted 4,457 Punjabi Americans, 3.98 per cent, the Elk Grove PUMA counted 3,300, and the south county and Delta PUMA counted 2,769. In the Central Valley as a whole, Punjabi is the third most spoken language after English and Spanish.
Punjabi farmers in the Sacramento Valley
The UC Davis Punjabi and Sikh Diaspora archive records that Punjabis have contributed to California agriculture for about 120 years. Early Punjabi pioneers helped build western rail lines and worked in lumber mills, but most came from farming backgrounds and gravitated to agriculture. In the Sacramento Valley they found rich soil that reminded them of Punjab, the land of five rivers, and they became known for work with peaches, walnuts and rice.
The scale of that early farming was large. The UC Berkeley account of South Asian pioneers in California records that by 1920 Punjabi immigrants owned 2,099 acres and were leasing 86,340 acres, almost exclusively in the Imperial and Sacramento valleys, growing cash crops including rice, cotton, peaches, grapes, almonds and vegetables. The same barriers applied here as elsewhere in California: alien land laws, the immigration restrictions of 1924, and a long wait until family immigration grew again after 1965.
The northern end of this valley story is Yuba City, about 40 miles north, where the Punjabi share of the population is far higher. Sacramento is the valley's big city and capital, and its Punjabi community carries considerable political, economic and cultural influence in the region, in the words of the UC Davis archive.
The gurdwara across the river in West Sacramento
The best documented gurdwara in the Sacramento area stands across the Sacramento River in West Sacramento, a separate city in Yolo County. The Sikh Temple Sacramento began in 1983, when the community bought a small church building at 2301 Evergreen Avenue on two acres and remodelled it as a gurdwara. More land followed in 1991, a new Gurdwara Sahib of about 20,000 square feet opened on 27 July 1997, and a larger two storey complex with a langar hall, a second prayer hall and schoolrooms was completed on 18 April 2010.
The temple has run a Sunday school since 1984, teaching Gurmukhi, Sikh history, Gurbani and kirtan, with over 300 students enrolled at the time of its 2015 report, and it holds an annual Punjabi cultural festival in May or June. The Sacramento Valley Charter School, a public charter school from kindergarten to grade 8, opened in a building in the gurdwara compound in August 2011 and had more than 240 students by 2015 to 2016. In July 2026 the City of West Sacramento marked the temple's 43rd anniversary with a bilingual Punjabi and English directional sign for the gurdwara, reported as the first of its kind in the Sacramento region.
Gurdwaras across Sacramento and Elk Grove
Sacramento city itself has a cluster of gurdwaras, most of them in the south of the city and in Natomas, matching the ACS pattern above. The UNITED SIKHS directory lists the Sacramento Sikh Society on Bradshaw Road, which describes itself as a vibrant Sikh community running regular Akhand Paath, Sehaj Paath and Sukhmani Sahib programmes, Gurdwara Dasmesh Darbar on Elk Grove Florin Road, the Capital Sikh Center on Pell Drive in Natomas, Guru Nanak Sat Sangat of California on Elsie Avenue, and a Guru Ravi Dass temple in Rio Linda, as well as the West Sacramento temple. Together with temples in Roseville and Elk Grove, the metro has a gurdwara within reach of every Punjabi neighbourhood.
Elk Grove, immediately south of Sacramento, is the other half of this community. In 2011 two Sikh grandfathers were killed while walking in Elk Grove, an attack that shocked the city; a decade later, in 2021, the city completed Singh and Kaur Park to commemorate them. In November 2020 Elk Grove elected Bobbie Singh-Allen as mayor, described by the city as the nation's first directly elected Sikh woman mayor. She had lived in Elk Grove for over 30 years and had served as a school district trustee from 2012.
Sacramento's Punjabi community today
Today Sacramento's Punjabis work across the valley economy and the state capital: farming families in the Delta and south county, state government and health workers, teachers, truckers and business owners, with children learning Gurmukhi at gurdwara schools founded by their grandparents' generation. The community is the Sacramento Valley counterpart to Stockton and Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley. For the full map, see Punjabi places in the United States.
