History

Tapa grew as a market town on the road between Barnala and Bathinda, and its full name says what it is: Tapa Mandi, the grain market of Tapa. For generations, farmers from the surrounding villages have brought their wheat and paddy here to sell, and in harvest season the mandi fills with tractor-trolleys lined up for auction. That trade is the town's economic backbone, supporting commission agents, labourers, transporters and shopkeepers.

The railway station on the Bathinda–Rajpura line strengthened this role, linking the mandi to larger markets. The town is also known for its historic deras and gurdwaras, which draw congregations through the year. In November 2006, when Barnala district was carved out of Sangrur, Tapa became part of the new district.

Geography & people

Tapa stands on National Highway 7 in the flat Malwa plain, about 24 km from Barnala and 42 km from Bathinda. The surrounding countryside is cotton, wheat and paddy country, and the town's life follows the agricultural calendar — busy at sowing and harvest, quieter in between.

The 2011 census counted 23,248 residents. Punjabi is the language of daily life; Sikhs form the majority, with Hindu and other communities part of the town's mix.

Places of interest

Tapa's old deras and gurdwaras are the main draw for visitors, each with its own following and annual gatherings. The grain market itself is a sight in season. Around the railway station lies the old bazaar, with shops that have served the mandi trade for decades.

Barnala city is a short drive away, and the road toward Bathinda runs through classic Malwa farmland.

Notable people

Tapa is known less for a single famous name than for its traders, religious preachers and the mandi community that keeps the town running. Figures associated with its historic deras are respected across the area.
