Where is Bhalojala?

Bhalojala is a village of Khadur Sahib tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khadur Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038318, and it covers 965 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,610 people in Bhalojala: 1,348 men and 1,262 women, living in 482 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 965 hectares, the population density works out to about 270 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 936 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 334, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,080 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.12 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.63 per cent and women at 61.51 per cent. The census recorded 830 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 790 main workers, the largest group, 323, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 296 other workers in trade, transport and services and 129 agricultural labourers. A further 40 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (588 hectares). About 377 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 331 cultivators and 136 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
