Where is Dinewal?

Dinewal is a village in Khadur Sahib tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Patti, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khadur Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038298, and it covers 617 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,850 people in Dinewal: 1,530 men and 1,320 women, living in 562 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 617 hectares, the population density works out to about 462 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 863 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 342, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,505 people, about 53 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.38 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.06 per cent and women at 63.14 per cent. The census recorded 975 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 848 main workers, the largest group, 376, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 263 cultivators on their own land and 195 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 127 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (571 hectares). About 46 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 268 cultivators and 461 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre.

The directory recorded Patti, about 14 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Khadur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Tarn Taran town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Mal Chak, Rakh Dinewal, Kang and Mandiala.
