Where is Gandiwind?

Gandiwind is a village in Tarn Taran tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Patti, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Chohla Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038001, and it covers 583 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,778 people in Gandiwind: 1,484 men and 1,294 women, living in 454 households, an average of about 6.1 people per household. Spread over its 583 hectares, the population density works out to about 477 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 872 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 366, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 821 people, about 30 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.56 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.6 per cent and women at 61.61 per cent. The census recorded 923 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 737 main workers, the largest group, 355, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 164 other workers in trade, transport and services and 161 agricultural labourers. A further 186 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Gandiwind's land. Of the village's 583 hectares, 518 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (518 hectares). About 65 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 385 cultivators and 218 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
