Where is Ruriwala?

Ruriwala is a village in Tarn Taran tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Patti, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Chohla Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038002, and it covers 607 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,719 people in Ruriwala: 1,433 men and 1,286 women, living in 465 households, an average of about 5.8 people per household. Spread over its 607 hectares, the population density works out to about 448 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 897 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 303, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 665 people, about 24 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.63 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.24 per cent and women at 66.32 per cent. The census recorded 840 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 584 main workers, the largest group, 337, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 165 other workers in trade, transport and services and 63 agricultural labourers. A further 256 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Ruriwala's land. Of the village's 607 hectares, 549 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (549 hectares). About 58 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 357 cultivators and 234 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Tarn Taran, the tehsil headquarters, and Tarn Taran town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Gandiwind, Nathupur, Marhana and Dhattal.
