Where is Khair Dinke?

Khair Dinke is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gandiwind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037869, and it covers 384 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,659 people in Khair Dinke: 1,426 men and 1,233 women, living in 432 households, an average of about 6.2 people per household. Spread over its 384 hectares, the population density works out to about 692 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 865 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 380, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,608 people, about 60 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.31 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.29 per cent and women at 55.49 per cent. The census recorded 1,032 workers, about 39 per cent of the village. Of the 528 main workers, the largest group, 380, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 91 agricultural labourers and 44 cultivators on their own land. A further 504 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (232 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (103 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 54 cultivators and 343 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
